HENRY SWANZY Landscape architecture at university, followed by ten years as a designer and maker of fine furniture is the experience that has lead Henry’s sculpture. His work looks to harness the natural beauty of gardens and landscapes with simple but bold forms made from the most sympathetic materials. They may frame vistas, or provide focal points within a garden, they may also swing or rotate gently in the wind, providing a constantly changing view or focus. The materials are a fundamental to the work, as are the methods of construction. Oak weathers to a beautiful silver colour and over time changes and develops, becoming a living and organic material once again. Air quality permitting, pale green and turquoise lichens will grow. The curved elements are jointed together using methods utilized in timber framed buildings. “Scarfed, through mortice and tenon joints” are held together using turned oak pegs. Verdigris copper has a natural affinity with both the silvered oak and the lichens. Henry’s pieces are either unique or editions of eight, each one being signed and numbered accordingly.
