SEFTON WHORLOW working and welding was as an apprentice in a fabrication plant. Subsequent jobs found him working on car repairs and the renovation of a passenger cruiser, but always prevalent was his artistic flair, a gift for seeing the hidden potential in scrap-metal objects and for assembling them into objet dart. His extraordinary skill at sculpting iron was quickly recognised and his break from mechanic to full-time artist came when he was asked to create an exhibit for the visit of the Prince of Wales to the Bristol group of the Princes Trust. His work is now much sought after, with a host of commissions under his belt from the National Trust to Wadworths Brewery and from businesses, schools and private individualsup and down the land. Using conventional ironworking techniques and raw materials gleaned from scrap yards, car boot fairs and farm sales, he has transformed old spanners, suspension springs, exhaust pipes, combine-harvester spikes, shovels and spades into the practical, the bizarre and the ornate: tables, chairs, candlesticks, gates, gnarled and twisting trees, giant insects, life-size sheep, 6 foot dolphins, pecking hens and a larger-than-life horse- pulled chariot with Boudica at the reins. Sefton has chosen to exhibit four members of his growing menagerie: Heron (5ft), Crowing Cock (5ft), Swan (5ft) and Pig (3ft), all limited editions. |
